Chess: Check, Checkmate and Stalemate Explained

The key is whether the king is under attack at this moment. There is no legal move; it could be either a checkmate or a stalemate.

First, distinguish between check and checkmate

The opponent's piece is attacking your king, called a "check". After being checked, you must make a legal move that lets the king escape the attack; Simply letting other pieces move further away is not enough. If there are still legal moves, the game continues; If there are no legal moves, it is checkmate, and the attacker wins.

You can check using three types of checks: can the king reach the safe square? Can you capture the attacking piece; If the attack comes in a straight or diagonal line, can you block it in the middle? For each plan, confirm again that the king is truly safe after the move.

stalemate: It wasn't checked, and I couldn't leave at all

If it is one side's turn to play, the king will be at this momentNois attacked, but that side has no legal moves, resulting in stalemate, not checkmate. Even if the other side still has many strong pieces left, they cannot win directly because of this.

How to avoid stalemate in advantageous situations

When attacking, don't just focus on the tiles around the sealed opponent's king. With every move, ask: Is the opponent's king currently checked? If not, does the blocked side still have soldiers or other pieces to play? If the opponent has no way to move but is not checked, the game ends in a draw.

This site also settles after three repeats, the fifty-turn rule, or when the piece power is insufficient. To win safely, you should form a true checkmate, not just relying on compressing the opponent's movement space.

Pay special attention

The site rules based on legal moves and whether the king is attacked, and does not end with "capturing the king." If the castling's target square does not appear, it may be that the king is attacked, passes through the attacked square, or the king and rook have already passed; You can check againSpecial Move Strategy。
