Gomoku attack and defense strategy

Gomoku: Open Fours, Closed Fours and When to Block

When four pieces of the same color are connected on a line, first count their available endpoints, then decide whether to attack or block.

First, see Gomoku's winning strategy

This site is the fifteenth row free Gomoku. If a piece is placed at an intersection point, horizontally, vertically, or on two diagonal lines, five or more pieces of the same color in a row win; If there are no forbidden moves, a long consecutive move also counts as a win. The following chess shapes are only partial indications on the same line, "·" represents an empty point, "●" represents your own piece, and "○" represents the opponent's piece.

Local chess shapecan be set to five pointsResponse
· ● ● ● ● ·Both ends of the left and right sidesLive Four: If the opponent blocks one end, the other end can still become five
○ ● ● ● ● ·One on the rightRush Four: The opponent only needs to block this end first

The edge of the board will also block one end. When judging, check whether the actual intersection point is empty; do not count the position outside the board as a playable point.

For each hand, follow this order first

  1. Can I immediately get five in a row?If possible, just place it at five and the round will end immediately.
  2. Can the opponent make five consecutive moves in the next move?Check each of the other person's four connected lines, especially the diagonal and edges.
  3. Then consider creating threats.Choose open points that can expand your consecutive positions while reducing your opponent's counterattack opportunities.

If the opponent has already formed a live four with both ends empty, blocking one endpoint usually won't be enough; First, check if you have a landing point that can win immediately.

When is rushing to level four useful?

There is only one rush to the fourth, which directly becomes a five-point attack, and the opponent can usually defend from that spot. Its value lies in forcing the opponent to respond, giving you time to connect to the other side; But if the other side doesn't follow, relying solely on the four-point rush may not win.

On this site, you don't need to judge "three-three forbidden moves" or "long combo forbidden moves" because the game uses free rules. Practicing first will recognize usable endpoints for four-combos, which is more practical than memorizing special forbidden moves.
