Xiangqi: Blocked Horses, Cannon Screens and Facing Generals

Even when you see your destination but can't get past it, you usually check the route first, then check if the commander is safe.

Mazou Ri, first look at "the horse's blocking square"

The horse moves in an L-shape but cannot jump over other pieces. First check the adjacent square in the horizontal or vertical direction, then the diagonal step. If any piece occupies that first square, both destinations beyond it are blocked.

When watching the horse's movement, first find the four adjacent "the horse's blocking square" points: upper, lower, left, and right, then look at the target point; Don't just look at whether the finish line is empty.

Cannon moves and cannon captures a piece, but the conditions are different

When the cannon does not capture, it moves straight along the horizontal or vertical line like the rook, with no pieces in between. When the cannon wants to capture an opponent's piece, there must be a gap between the cannon and the targetJust one chess piece was separatedThis piece is called the "cannon screen," which can be either your own or the opponent's piece.

Even if the cannon screen meets the condition, the target must still be the opponent's piece; Your own piece cannot be captured.

Generals and commanders cannot face each other directly on the same route

Both the Red General and Black General remain within their respective palaces and can only move one square along the horizontal or vertical line. If both are on the same vertical line with no pieces in between, it results in a face facing the general-commander. If the only piece blocking the general and commander is moved away and no other pieces fill in, this move may also cause a face-to-face move, so this move is illegal.

When checking your desired piece, don't just look at how it moves; also check whether your generals will be attacked after it moves away. This site prohibits moves that keep your generals under attack.

The order of checks for a single move

  1. Confirm that it's your turn, and the target point is not your own piece.
  2. Check the path by type: the horse looks at the horse's blocking square, the cannon distinguishes between movement and capture, and the chariot checks whether the straight line is smooth.
  3. Imagine the chessboard after moving the pieces: do the generals and generals face each other? Will your generals still be attacked?

If the destination isn't marked as accessible by the game, you can usually find the reason by reviewing it in this order.
